Valerie (Val) Jeanne Rickerl Roth passed away on July 10, 2026 in Aiken, SC. She was born in Clinton, IA on June 11,1967. She graduated from Clinton High School in 1986. After graduating from Clinton Community College, Val began a career in banking/finance in Jacksonville, FL which she continued in Virginia Beach, VA and Summerville, SC. She also earned a degree in Medical Transcription, which she utilized at Virginia Beach General Hospital for many years, supporting multiple cardiac surgeons. She was a career Naval Aviation/Naval Special Warfare spouse who traveled far and wide for two decades in support of her husband’s career.
Val’s love for animals was evidenced by her devotion to pet birds Speckels, Junior and Davey. Later she discovered cats and rescued Felix (aka Mr. Bitey) and Kit Kat with a true soft spot for her nieces 20lb cat “Mr. Fluff”. She was a true Gen X child of the ‘80’s. Her favorite bands included The Clash, Adam Ant, The Ramones, The Call, Gary Numan and Flock of Seagulls. She loved attending concerts, proudly saving each souvenir t-shirt and ticket stub. She enjoyed caring for her fur babies and back porch sitting with dozens of hummingbirds. She loved to garden and mastered the riding mower with ease. She was an avid reader and woman of faith. Val nourished lifelong friendships and cherished her family. Taking after her mother, she was known for her active sweet tooth and love of all thing’s chocolate. A true “Chocolate Champion”. In support of her husband’s military career, Val spent 2.5 years living in England, where she developed many special relationships within the United Kingdom and Europe which she always cherished. Later in life, Val discovered a true passion for cooking. She shared her love of Indian cuisine and caring for others by serving wonderful meals from new recipes she discovered.
Valerie is survived by her high school sweetheart and loving husband of 37 years, Michael Roth CPO USN (Ret); Mother Donna Ruess Rickerl, siblings Dawn Rickerl Horst (Stanley), Gregory Rickerl and Andrea Rickerl Harding (Doug); niece Erin Horst Charlson; nephew Nathan Horst; and mother-in-law Sharon Roth. She is predeceased by her father, James Rickerl and her father-in-law, Robert Roth. Val was strong, smart, beautiful, supportive, selfless, funny, confident, compassionate, dedicated, loving and loyal. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her.
