Leon Bowers, Jr.

March 17, 1940 — December 1, 2019

Mr. Leon Bowers, Jr.

Aiken, SC—Memorial services for Mr. Leon Bowers, Jr. age 79 will be held 1:00 pm Thursday at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses on Croft Mill Road, Aiken, with Brother Adrian Cloud officiating. Mr. Bowers entered into rest Sunday December 1, 2019 at his residence.  He was a native of Aiken and moved to Queens, New York. In 1977 Mr. Bowers moved back to home town of Aiken. Leon was the only son of Leon and Mary (Priester) Bowers, Sr. He was born March 17, 1940 in Aiken, SC. He had one sister, Hattie Mae Bartley.  On March 17, 1962, Leon married Zelma Hagin in New York, where he worked as a cook at La Guardia airport for at least 10 years.  The family lived in Flushing Queens, New York until 1976 and then moved back to Aiken. Leon was a father to three children, one son, Leon “Al” (Wandala) and two daughters, Pat (Limuer) Myers, and Deneen (Marion) Mays.  His family grew larger with him having 12 grandchildren, 17 great grands, and 1 great great-grand.  Leon has a host of other family members that includes three favorite nephews (sons of his deceased sister), dedicated aunts, in-laws, and cousins.

Leon was baptized as one of Jehovah’s Witnesses on March 22, 1975 in New York. His goal was to regularly share bible scriptures with those in the community.  As a pioneer, he dedicated 70 hours a month to preaching and teaching the bible. Although suffering through a myriad of health issues, Leon’s faith and service to Jehovah never wavered.  Many who knew him, knew about his love for and faith in Jehovah God.  With a smile on his face, Leon was always ready to share with others the good news that he read about in the bible.  He talked to others about his hope for the future and what our Heavenly Father requires for us to do to please him well.  He set a fine example of being one who showed love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faith, mildness, and self-control, qualities found at Galatians 5: 22, 23.

In his earlier years, Leon played football and basketball in high school.  Throughout his years he held a love for watching westerns and old movies. He enjoyed gardening and working on cars until his disability prevented him from doing these.  Leon had many friends who he enjoyed talking to and being around. It was the time spent helping to care for his older grandchildren when they were babies that increased his patience that everyone saw in him. Leon and his contagious smile will be missed until we see him again.

A visitation with the family will take place following the service in the foyer of the Kingdom Hall.  COLE FUNERAL HOME 1544 UNIVERSITY PARKWAY (118 BY PASS) AIKEN, SC, 29801. 803-648-7175. Please sign the online registry at www.colefuneralhomeinc.com.
