This obituary has been placed out of courtesy and respect to Rev. Brancie and Connie Stephens of Aiken, SC, for the loss of Mrs. Stephen's sister.
CASTLEWOOD, VIRGINIA – Jimmy Gay Yates Meade, 92, passed away on Sunday, June 28, 2026, at her home.
She was born in Lebanon, Virginia, the daughter of the late Conley G. and Helen Monk Yates. Jimmy Gay was a member of the First Baptist Church in St. Paul, Virginia, for over sixty-five years, where she was active in the Women’s Missionary Union and Vacation Bible School. Along with her late husband, she owned and operated the Big M Discount Store for forty-five years, serving her community. She never met a stranger and was always kind and welcoming to anyone she met. Jimmy Gay was a petite force to be reckoned with. She approached life with class and grace. Above all, she loved her family. She was preceded in death by her husband of seventy-three years, Fred Meade; one sister, Opal Jean Wallace and husband, Ralph; one grandson, William Todd Fields, and one brother-in-law, Bernard Meade.
Jimmy Gay is survived by one son, Jerry W. Meade and wife, Judy of Castlewood, Virginia; one daughter, Angie Fields and husband, Junior of Castlewood, Virginia; seven grandchildren, Ashli Castle and husband, Jason, Drew Meade and wife, Amanda, Kara Bush and husband, Brandon, Julie Large and husband, Stephen, Jamie Fields, Ben Fields and wife, Kaitlin, and Christopher Meade; two step-grandchildren, Shawn Kiser and wife, Amanda, and Christie Davenport and husband, Michael; twelve great-grandchildren, whom she had a very special relationship with, Shayli Castle Davis, Slade Castle, Jake Bush, Joel Bush, Addison Bush, Lusa Bush, Owen Meade, Grady Meade, Quinn Fields, Cleo Fields, Elliott Large, and Joseph Large; one sister, Connie Stephens and husband, Brancie of Aiken, South Carolina; one brother, Danny Yates and wife, Loretta of Lebanon, Virginia; one sister-in-law, Alice Meade of Lebanon, Virginia; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral Services for Jimmy Gay Meade will be conducted at 7:00 p.m., Wednesday, July 1, 2026, at Castlewood Funeral Home Chapel, Castlewood, Virginia, with Rev. Brancie Stephens, Pastor Andy Wood, Rev. Lee Kidd, and Rev. Mike Moore officiating. Committal Service and Interment will be conducted at 10:00 a.m., Thursday, July 2, 2026, at Temple Hill Memorial Park, Castlewood, Virginia. Family and friends will meet at the funeral home at 9:00 a.m. and go in procession to the cemetery, leaving at 9:30 a.m., Thursday. Pallbearers will be grandsons. Honorary Pallbearers will be Men of St. Paul First Baptist Church.
The family will receive friends from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m., Wednesday, July 1, 2026, at Castlewood Funeral Home, Castlewood, Virginia.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in memory of Jimmy Gay Meade to St. Paul First Baptist Church, P. O. Box 546, St. Paul, VA 24283.
